Welcome to the new interactive Westie Walkers site which includes a discussion forum for the benefit of Westie owners. The forum is a place for you to share your thoughts and tips on owning, training, and living with Westies, and to help fellow Westie owners with needs like dog sitting, play dates and walking. The aim of Westie Walkers is simply to bring together Westies and friends of Westies for fun, friendship and philanthropy. Enjoy - Maggie The Philanthropooch.

Photos from April 2012 Simply Social Walk

The Autumn Simply Social Walk took place on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Waterfront Park, Newstead. After brief scattered showers throughout the day threatened the walk, it cleared to brilliant sunshine, a cool breeze and a spectacular rainbow over the river. Several Westie puppies now old enough to take part showed up, Charlie, Bella (all the way from the Gold Coast just for the walk), Winston and Roxie - welcome to y'all!

Most entertaining though was a Wannabe Westie of proportions not seen before - Hank - the cross bull mastiff and boxer! A little concern about how he might get along with a bunch of excitable Westies was quickly put to rest. Hank came along with his best friend and boss, Boris the Westie, who also came along for the first time, skipping the entire way. Welcome to you too, Boris (although you were overshadowed by Hank in more ways than one). Of course, Westies are known to be 'a big dog in a little dog's body', but Hank it seems, is really just 'a little dog in a big dog's body'.

Hank appears in the group photo because he was such a sport! Not only did he politely walk behind the group, but he took it on the chin when a few Westies ganged up on him moments before the group photo. And to all those in the know, the solution to Maggie's barking during a photo shoot is to put her way out in front - who would have guessed!

Thanks also to Spencer, Snoopy and Liz's Westie (really sorry, got stuck with his name...please contact us to fill it in Liz) and the incidental Westies (Mia and Oscar) who just happened to be passing by!

See you all next time.

Westie Walker cap survey

Westie Walker cap

The Westie Walker cap survey will run until midnight Saturday 2 April 2011 to determine how many Westie Walkers want caps. The order will only go ahead if the manufacturer's required minimum number of caps is met. The final price per cap will be quoted by the manufacturer when the number of caps to be ordered is known. Westie Walkers who want caps will need to pre-pay to cover the cost of production.

If there is enough interest, the caps can hopefully be ordered and manufactured before the next walk!

Sasha needs a friend

Another of our Westie Walker community is wanting to adopt a second Westie into their pack.  Please contact Jess at the number below if you know of a male Westie that needs a new home.

"We are looking to extend our family by inviting a 2nd Westie to join our clan. Our current Westie, Sasha, is 16 weeks old and is in serious need of an older (preferably house trained) brother. We are looking for a male (desexed) Westie aged anywhere between 8months to 3 years old. Sasha loves other Westies and we can't wait until she has a little soul mate to keep her company. If you know of anyone (or if you, yourself) that has a Westie to sell (or give away) to an excellent home, please let me know as soon as possible. My husband and i look forward to hearing from anyone who can assist us. Please call Jess on 0438383950. Thank you!!"

Wanted: Westie companion for lonely Westie

Di is looking to adopt a Westie as a companion for Angus, who recently lost his mate.  He's lonely and would love the company of another adult female Westie (mind you, not for breeding purposes).

Please contact Di on 0423 139 537 if you are looking to rehome a Westie.

Fergus has Talent

One of our Westie Walkers' regulars, Fergus, recently took part in Dr Harry's "Pets' Got Talent" with his sidekick Vincent.  He was great! And on our scale he was the best dog on the day. Maybe he'll show us some of his tricks at the next walk.

You can see his act for yourself on the BH&G website

It's good to hear you all enjoyed the walk last weekend.  It was lovely seeing you all again after so long.

Ruby Needs a Home

UPDATE: 11 August 2010

We've received some fantastic news! Mahlah and her pack have been able to find Ruby a new home; although it's a fair way away, it sounds like Ruby will have an idyllic existence.  She'll be moving to Hervey Bay with a retired couple who live on the beach and walk twice a day, and who have been wanting a Westie for some time.  They don't have any other pets and Ruby will be Top Dog!

We love a happy ending!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wee Ruby is an absolutely gorgeous Westie who needs a loving home where she can be Top Dog!

We have received the following information from Mahlah, her current Pack Leader, who has had to make this difficult decision.

"We have a 3.5 years old pure breed West Highland Terrier, Ruby. We originally purchased Ruby hoping she would be a companion for our 5 years old Westie, Frank. However when Ruby reached maturity we found they both started fighting. They simply don’t get on and over the past few years we have managed the problem by keeping them apart. This has worked up until now but recently we have welcomed a new baby in the family (2 weeks old) and management of the two dogs has become an impossibility. We are seeking a new home for Ruby who would thrive in a single pet household. Ruby is a very loved Westie and beautiful loving pet and we really want to find the best home possible for her, unfortunately due to irreconcilable sibling rivalry we have to give her up."

So if know someone who needs a Westie to brighten up their likely otherwise ordinary lives, or if you and your Westie might have the necessary generosity of spirit to give gorgeous Ruby the extra special attention she needs. Mahlah can be contacted by email malkens[at]optusnet[dot]com[dot]au

Here's a photo of Ruby

Dr Harry's Dog Biscuits

Attached is a recipe for dog biscuits from Dr Harry of Better Homes and Gardens.  Lulu and Fergus, regulars at our walks, love them.  Even Lulu who is a very fussy eater.  The biscuits are healthy, salt free and will store for up to 2 months.

Max and Coco have a home

For those of you who have been wondering, after 3 months and several false starts and dashed hopes, brother and sister Max and Coco finally found a wonderful new home in May. We hope to see the whole pack at our next Westie Walk!

Coco and Max are looking for a new home

Barbara, and her daughter Katie, are in the unfortunate position of having to re-home their Westies, Coco and Max due to personal reasons.  Westie Walkers has in the past helped other Westies be adopted, so we hope that either you, or someone you know, will want to add Coco and Max to their pack and love them as much as Barbara and Katie do.  Barbara has sent us a biography of Coco and Max, which we have included below.  We hesitate to put personal contact details on the website, so if you are interested in contacting Barbara, please send us an email using the "Contact Us" link at the top of this page and we will put you in contact with her.

Max and coco are brother and sister and have never been separated - it is very important to us that this remains the case as when they are separated they pine for one another. They both have a gentle nature but each is an individual....Coco is highly intelligent, bossy and curious and quick (she is the guard dog, so to speak)! Max on the other hand loves to be loved, cuddled, spoiled and is quite sensitive.

We have allowed them to live both in (at night) and out (day time) of the house. My daughter is hearing impaired and Max and Coco have been her constant companions. Max has chosen to sleep on the end of my daughters bed when allowed and Coco prefers to sleep on the floor ever vigilant. Occasionally, Max can't resist the temptation to mark his territory. But he usually gets sprung before he has the chance.

They are both used to our large family and familiar faces, including children. Coco will bark at a stranger and stand her ground in the first instant but will sit when instructed or withdraw when whistled or requested.

Both Coco and Max will sit when requested, leave the room or area when ordered and are trained to sit and wait for their food (and permission) when placed in front of them.

They have not been to 'Doggy' School and sometimes they can be a handful when socializing. More often with my daughter than myself.

I hope that this info helps. They are not perfect but they are very loving and adventurous. They are fun just waiting to happen!!

Please let us know if you can help....We can wait as long as it takes for the right home.

Simply Social 1 - 2009

The first social walk of the year was held at Methyr Park on Sun 15 February 2009. The breezes from the Brisbane River provided welcome relief from the steamy heat that prevailed after the forecast showers fortunately stayed away. There was a fantastic turnout with 38 dogs keen and eager to enjoy the afternoon,  of which 35 were Westies and 3 Wannabe's. It was great to see everyone, new faces and loyal regulars alike!

March of the Westies

Thank you all for coming to the March of the Westies Fundraising event on 30 November 2008. A total of 75 Westies are known to have attended the final Westie Walk of the year! As usual in addition, our loyal Honorary Westie Chloe the miniature poodle was present, along with a motley crew of Wannabe Westies, including labradors, a beagle and some adorable no name brands!

Altogether, the sale of raffle tickets for prizes (kindly donated by our major sponsors Zone Fresh Gourmet Markets, di Bella Coffee and the Pack at Number 58), donations, and profits made from the sale of Westie Walker caps raised over $500 for Guide Dogs Queensland. Maggie is also donating the money she raised throughout 2008 to cover the manufacturing costs of the cap to Guide Dogs Queensland as well.

Westie Walker caps cost $20 and can be ordered by email. There must be a minimum of 25 paid up requests before the manufacturing run can be processed. If there aren't 25 orders by the next walk (planned for February 2009) the money paid will be refunded. All profits from the sale of caps will be donated to Guide Dogs Queensland from Westie Walkers.

Update 3/12/2008: Our photos from the walk have been posted in the Westie Walkers flickr pool.  If you have photos from the walk, please post them to this pool on flickr too.  Membership of flickr is free, so if you're not already a member, sign up for an account.

Desperately Seeking Westies

Two members of Westie Walkers are looking for mature, preferably female Westies to join their respective existing packs. Daisy recently lost her best friend to old age and the Jadene's 5 year old Westie wants a playmate. If you know of any Westie's needing a loving home and existing pack, please contact Jadene at jadenel@msn.com and Sally at sallyandcampbell@hotmail.com

Inaugural Canberra Westie Walk

In what looked like fairly cool autumn conditions, Julie and Nick held the inaugural Canberra Westie Walk a couple of weekends ago. Thanks for sending us report and photos of the event, and we hope your group goes from strength to strength.

Hello fellow Westies in Brisbane. Our names are Maddie and Darcy and we live in Canberra. Our cousins live in Brisbane and told us so much about the Westie Walkers that we decided to start a group in Canberra. Our inaugural walk was held on Saturday 6 September 2008. We invited our friends from Sunday morning obedience lessons at the ACT Companion Dog Club – yes we are trainable despite our stubborn moments.

We walked around Lake Burley Griffin starting and ending at the National Carillon. The walk was delayed whilst our Pack Leaders returned home to get our leads –don’t they know that after us, leads are the most important things for Westie Walks. Everybody had a great time. We are planning to do another walk before Christmas. If you are a Westie in Canberra and would like to join us in the future, you can contact us at julieandnick@grapevine.com.au.

Have a go at showing your Westie...

and help an trainee show judge get accreditation.

The West Highland White Terrier Club of Queensland will be holding an open show day on 20 September at their grounds at Durack. Since it is an open show, you don't have to be a member of the Canine Control to enter. All your Westie will have to do on the day is be clean (which we know can be difficult sometimes), and walk on a lead in the direction the judge says. At the same time you'll be helping a trainee judge who will be assessed on the day for his national licence. So if you have wanted to see how your Westie goes in a show why not enter and join in the fun and support our state's WHWT Club.
