Hair all over the house!

Of course naturally dogs shed - some more than others. I have two gorgeous westies, but I just can't seem to keep the house clear of dog hair. It seems as though their hair is breaking off in small bits because I'm always dusting mounds of small bits of hair from the leather sofa and coffee table off. I'm just not sure if this is common because it seems as though it's a lot of hair than other dogs. From what I read, Westies should shed little to no hair. Not to mention it's difficult to wear anything black without leaving the house looking like a snow man. Okay I'm exaggerating a bit, but I'm hoping someone can offer some info and tips! I brush them twice a week, once after a bath. I'm feeding them Eukeneba sensitive skin as one of them is also battling skin issues. (I'm not sure yet but from that it sounds like I think it may be atopic dermatitus.) Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Peter

Re: Hair all over the house!

Hi Peter, We had Magi for 1.5 years, she shed very little to no hair. We give her home-made food plus dry dog food with the supplements of brewer's yeast and occasionally some kelp, which helps with westie skins and hair. We dry wash her (with cornflour) every two weeks and bath her once every 3-4 months with Fido's puppy shampoo which won't strip off their natural skin oils. Magi has never had any skin problems, shedding, itchiness and no bad smell too. Hope it helps, and all the best :)

Hair everywhere

I have two Westies. One does not shed at all and the other leaves a white furry trail wherever she goes. The vet told us it is the luck of the draw - there is not much you can do about it except invest in a good vacuum cleaner!! Just enjoy them!!!

Hair all over the house reply

Hi Peter I have two very active westies 2 and 7 years (we do not show them but they are our children) we have found that some itching and hair loss occurred if we bathed them regularly and did not use a very gently shampoo. We have since adopted the "once a month bath" (don’t worry, if you brush them regularly enough they don’t seem to get that really doggie smell) and only use Dermcare natural shampoo and conditioner which is made for sensitive skin. We also only feed them Advance Dry Food (as recommended by our vet) and we have never had any issues since (within reasonable hair loss parameters). We also found that our two love to play fight, get rough and roll around whilst having their mouths holding onto the other dogs hair, so naturally that also can add to the hair clumps from time to time. You might already be aware of some of these things but if not I hope it helps.
