Hi!
Just wondering, does anyone out there have a Westie that swims? I woke up last night to find that our Westie, Halo had jumped into the swimming pool at 11pm and if I hadn't have heard the splash in my sleep, she would have drowned since she can't get out. Shes two now and never done this before, even after testing her with favourite toys and food. Just wondering if anyone else out there had had their dog jump randomly into a pool and if so, does anyone know why she might have done this?
Madison!
Yes... My westie swims too.
We took her to the beach this evening and well supervised i might ad.
he followed my daughter right into the Chesapeake Bay.
It was wonderful to see him enjoying it.
Libby the swimming Westie
Libby is soon to be ten years old and has been swimming in the pool for several years. I have gone through numerous pool toys that she loves to "kill". With all her swimming she is solid as a rock. When someone puts a swimsuit on she goes nuts and whimpers and cries until she can get into the pool.
Swimming Westie
Our Westie had a hip operation when he was 6 months old, and after that we took him to the canine hydrotherapy centre at Greenbank several times per week. He loved it, and still loves going swimming, but again, only if it's still water. I have also seen the ramp products advertised on the internet they seem like a good idea if you have a pool where the dog can enter unsupervised. The problem with teaching your dog where the stairs is, is that when they panic, they will forget (at least that's what the ramp website say...)
Swimming Westie
Our westie, Heidi, loves to swim - whenever she can. We did not realise that it was unusual until we saw 2 westie owners at Kedron Brook on the same day who exclaimed "WOW - a westie that swims!"
Molly swims all the time
Molly is our westy, or rather we are molly's humans. She's seven years old and has been swimming in the pool regularly for years. She's way too chicken to do a full blown belly flop into the pool but fortunately it has a graded walk-in area which she sussed out when she was a pup. She started walking in until the water came up to her neck. Then she got braver & braver now she walks in & does a couple of laps. She does this whenever it's really hot or whenever she's just been for a professional grooming. Or whenever the ducks land in the pool which she finds quite tempting. We got a $20 blow up crocodile from the National Geographic shop which seems to have sorted the ducks out. Molly knows the layout of the pool perfectly & has no problems walking in and out when it's dark, otherwise, I'd close the molly-gap in the pool fencing.
Westies and Water
Hi Madison
Sorry to hear your dog jumped in the pool! We have two Westies, Bonnie and her daughter Kenzie. Bonnie takes every possible opportunity to jump into any water (puddles, creeks, surf, pools) and she swims like a fish, yet Kenzie is the total opposite and avoids water at all costs! I was in a pet shop the other day and I saw a product which is a little "ramp" which pool owners can put in their pools, and it assists a dog to get out if they accidentally fall in the pool. This might be something worth investing in!
Cheers Leanne
Swimming Westie
Hi, we don't have a pool but I have friends that do and each time I teach my westie where the stairs are so he can get out.....my westie likes to swim but teaching them where they have to get out would be my suggestion
westie swimming
My two don't voluntarily swim in the pool - they occasionally fall in when running excitedly round it when we are swimming. I assume your pool in not fenced if she could get to it at night so she may have accidentally fallen in while chasing something.
One of mine will swim in still water like lakes that he can walk into.
